I think that the earlier the better in this case as most young people can navigate computers and video games well enough. I suppose I'd say about 3rd grade, maybe even younger for simple technologies.
I think that as soon as children are capable of reading and comprehending what is being read a teacher can begin to familiarize the students with technology. Even if the "in depth" assignment is following a step by step worksheet to explore technology, that would begin teaching young children to work with technology and become more comfortable with it at an earlier age. This could also become beneficial in discovering the level of comprehension that each student has. If someone is struggling to follow directions, this will be obvious by their inability to finish the assignment.
I think that depending on the assignment, the students can begin early. My 2 year old nephew knows how to start videos once you get him into the website. Obviously, once they know how to read, the assignments difficulty can be increased.
Depending on how in depth the assignments are I think students in 4th and 5th grade can begin doing assignments that involve technology.
